Tell me more about free hemming.

We are pleased to offer free hemming for any Shockoe Atelier jeans.  We hem our jeans using single-needle chain-stitching so that over time, they will develop the roping effect they should.  It’s important to note that we cannot provide refunds or exchanges on hemmed items, so we encourage you to be sure of fit before requesting hemming for your item.

Note that we offer hemming only on our raw denim items.

You are responsible for the cost of shipping your item to us for hemming.  We suggest you use a shipping service that is trackable and insured, as we are not liable for any lost or undeliverable shipments.

Email us at orders@shockoedenim.com for a hemming request form, and enclose a copy of the completed form with your shipment.

Will my jeans bleed?

If your jeans are raw, yes they will bleed.  You can minimize this by soaking your jeans.  Here’s how:  Fill a bathtub with enough cold water to cover your jeans, and submerge your jeans in the water.  Your jeans may try to float, so to keep them submerged, weigh them down with shampoo bottles or something similar.  Keep them submerged for about an hour, then hang dry.  This will remove some of the excess indigo dye and help “set” the jeans.

Why are my jeans so stiff?

If you’re wearing your raw denim jeans for the first time, they will probably feel snug and quite stiff.  Rest assured, as you wear the jeans the denim will give and begin to soften.  After even the first wear, they will begin to feel much more comfortable.  The more active you are in your jeans and the more you wear them, the faster they will break in, fade, and mold to your body.

What’s the best way to wash my jeans?

If your jeans are raw, we recommend wearing them for at least six months before your first wash.  Once you’re ready to wash your jeans, we recommend hand washing.  Here’s how:  Fill a bathtub with cold to lukewarm water.  Add a small amount of gentle detergent (we recommend Woolite Black).  Turn your jeans inside-out and submerge them in the water.  Agitate the jeans lightly, and let them sit under the water for about an hour.  Rinse the jeans with cold water to remove any soap.  Hang dry.

Machine washing is also fine.  Just make sure to turn them inside-out, and use cold water on the gentle cycle.  Hang to dry.

Note that washing your raw denim jeans will cause them to shrink, but they should give again with wear.
